Kyle “El Guante” Myhre wrote an article addressing some of the concerns or stereotypes surrounding spoken word and slam poetry, and I agreed that MN Mic was a perfect place for such an article to exist.
I’ve put Kyle’s article over on the right hand “pages” menu, but I’m also posting here so that that it doesn’t fly under your radar. Kyle refutes the ideas that all spoken word sounds alike and says the same thing, that it lacks the quality of page poetry, that it’s just hiphop without production, that slams encourage flash over substance, and that spoken word is a fad. Take the time to read it, if you feel any resistance to spoken word or slam.
And finally, come out to the Urban Griots Spoken Word Awards Show on the 3rd of April- you can see the best of the best, find out what’s going on where, who is doing what. Please come out, bring your friends, see what’s going on.
